Activity 9: Proposals for coal seam gas water use in the QMDB

Activity 9 investigated the potential impacts of proposals for CSG water use on aquatic ecosystems in the QMDB. Specifically, it developed a framework for assessing cumulative impacts of multiple CSG water discharge proposals in catchments of the QMDB.

The outputs of activity 9 built upon the findings of activity 4, which developed a decision support system for assessing CSG water discharge proposals on a site-specific basis.

Outcomes

A range of scenarios were developed to assess flow-related cumulative impacts based on existing and proposed CSG water locations and discharge schedules (volumes and timing) nominated by the CSG companies, as well as using current scientific understanding to nominate alternate sites and varied discharge arrangements.

Factors which contribute to the cumulative water quality impacts upon the aquatic ecosystems of the QMDB were then identified. The final work under the activity integrated the findings of the hydrology and water quality studies into an integrated assessment framework for cumulative impacts of CSG discharge to surface waters.
