Simtars offers testing and certification services for explosion protected electrical equipment, as well as calibration services for electrical, pressure, temperature, humidity and torque measuring instruments.
We have close to 30 years of experience helping equipment manufacturers and equipment operators associated with underground coal mines, oil refineries, petrol stations, grain silos, sewerage treatment plants and processing industries.
Assessment and testing services
We apply a structured process to assess and test various products and equipment. Drawings are initially assessed to define the aspects requiring testing, followed by sample assessment and testing in accordance with industry standards.

Explosion-protected electrical equipment (Ex equipment)
We have facilities to perform testing against most industry Ex protection techniques, such as flameproof (Ex d), intrinsic safety (Ex i), pressurised enclosures (Ex p), increased safety (Ex e), non-sparking (Ex n) and encapsulation (Ex m).
Degree of Ingress Protection (IP) of electrical equipment enclosures
We can assess the degrees of protection provided against ingress of dust and moisture to ensure the safety of both user and equipment. This involves determining the Degree of Ingress Protection (IP) rating applied to an enclosure, and assessing this against the international IP coding system to ensure the required protection has been met.
Fire-resistant anti-static (FRAS) materials
We conduct tests to determine the propensity of materials to readily ignite or trigger explosions in hazardous environments. This involves ensuring non-metallic materials used in explosive atmospheres with flammable gases or dusts have adequate flame-retardant and anti-static properties.

We are accredited by the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ) and IECEx to undertake product and equipment certification. Electrical equipment or protective systems must conform to explosion protection schemes in order to be deemed safe for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. We provide independent evidence of a manufacturer's compliance with these requirements and technical standards. This process involves:
- determining the applicable standards
- assessing documentation and samples, and testing against required standards
- auditing the manufacturer's facilities to assess capability for ongoing product compliance.
Current certification services include:
- certification of equipment for use in explosive atmospheres, to ANZEx and IECEx schemes
- certification of repair and overhaul facilities for Ex equipment, to ANZEx and IECEx schemes
- certification of management systems to ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems for explosion protected equipment manufacturers and service facilities.
We conduct initial and ongoing audits as part of all certification processes.
Our calibration laboratory specialises in calibrating measuring equipment to meet compliance requirements. The service supports our testing and certification activities and is also available to general industry.
The laboratory is accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) under the AS ISO/IEC 17025 standard. Each calibration is accompanied by detailed reporting of the calibration outcome and/or data.
Calibration and minor repairs are available for an extensive range of equipment, including:
- air and oil operated pressure balances
- comprehensive range of electrical measuring instruments
- temperature and humidity measuring instruments, including controlled ovens and environmental chambers
- torque wrenches.
We are NATA-accredited to calibrate a range of gas detecting and monitoring equipment. The accreditation covers specific gases, detector types and concentration ranges, for example:
- carbon monoxide: by electrochemical sensor over a 0.0001-1% range
- methane: by pellistor sensor over a 0.0001-5% range
- oxygen: by electrochemical sensor over a 0.0001-25% range.
